ASUS P5NSLI with nForce 570 SLI. Placeholder or chip set alternative?
Introduction
It is not always easy to keep up with the times. This probably also nVidia currently must learn the nForce Chipset of next generation for Intel CPUs moves ever further, although first test samples were available months ago. Probably it was due to competition forced to improve, refine and stabilize. After all, the counterparts in PES on Intel’s can not a little successful i975 – and resort i965 chipset, which not only in terms of performance and stability, but also by low heat release conditionally passive chilled and yet excellently over clock bar.
In addition, the latest enthusiast chipset from nVidia hits the nForce, 4 in the SLI-x 16 version, good against Intel’s high end counterpart. The new litter must be so a next, otherwise you lose perhaps not only the delayed start against Intel’s in-house competing chipsets for nVidia.
This also explains why the first nForce 570-boards on the market come without being pulled by a new nForce 5 spearhead in the form of the nForce 590 SLI: while gewerkelt eagerly on top front and improved, to the competitive mainstream market operated once in advance and therefore not without a fight abandoned are. This can only succeed if the new chipset in mid-priced against highly equipped and-gezüchtete mainboards of the competition in price segments of every stripe can claim. The demands are so high and our first nForce-5-test candidate for Intel in the form of ASUS P5NSLI faces a demanding task. The following test to clarify to what extent he satisfies it.

To obtain a better overview of the chip sets that currently support core 2 processors, a compatibility chart is given at this point once again. It is however important to note that not all motherboards which have one of the compatible chipsets support also core 2 CPUs in each revision! An example is the ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe, that can only record the new Intel processors from the revision of 2.02G. The ASUS P5W DH Deluxe requires at least a BIOS update before a core 2 extreme 2 Duo or core!

- 1 x slot
The ASUS P5NSLI offers the facilities usual for the price without surprise with special extras.
Layout
The ASUS P5NSLI is open; In addition to two PCIe-offers three PCIe x 16 slots-x 1-as well as two PCI slots. These are distributed so that in the worst case, so for use with two graphics cards with dual-slot cooling, two PCIe-x 1- and a PCI slot left. For use with a graphics card, all other slots are so that they are still accessible. Only a second larger sized graphics card can lead to problems with the SATA ports; our test video card, an nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX reference design, partially blocked the four SATA connectors so that with normal plugs was only one to achieve. The problem could be however deal with angled heads.
The connection for the floppy drive is rather inconvenient. By positioning at the bottom of the Board, across not only the cable must be conducted on the motherboard. When a the ASUS P5NSLI with several cards you installed access to the floppy connector is probably even if the lower PCI-course must include a card with more structure, for example, a TV show,. After all, two IDE slots are provided so that owners of the mainboard must not necessarily upgrade to SATA hard drives to connect your optical drive to the IDE connector.
Positively falls to the completely passive cooling of motherboard which is expressed in a large passive heatsink on the Northbridge. The southbridge has no own heat sink. In this context however, why there are only two more 3-pin heads for more case fans in addition to the 4-pin connector for the processor fan is incomprehensible. A passive cooling works well only at comparatively decent housing ventilation, for stability, it would be so beneficial to be able to connect more than two case fan. Nevertheless, the two ports are logically placed so that easily connect a rear case fan on the 3-pin connector in addition to the Northbridge and a front fan to which in addition to the southbridge.
Unfortunately relatively little connectivity offers the ASUS P5NSLI: Sun motherboard only has a Gigabit Ethernet port and does not have the motherboard header, or the slot has the ability to connect FireWire devices. Go the used AD1986A sound chip to only three training or inputs (depending on the configuration request). A coaxial S/PDIF output does well here only little ground. After all, there is the ASUS P5NSLI also in the WiFi Edition which in addition has a built-in WLAN chip.

Interrupt distribution
A look into the manual reveals a good distribution of the IRQs. So eight lines on the individual components are distributed, no more than four devices must share a line here.

BIOS
The BIOS was present at the time of the test in the version of 0601.
Fan control
The ASUS P5NSLI offers unfortunately only a fan controller for the CPU fan. This can be set the voltage of the CPU fan at low speed and the temperature, the fan with ultra-low respectively with highest speed among the works is to step in.
BIOS Flash
Flashing the BIOS’ update program on Windows is possible from the DOS environment out via boot disk as well as with the ASUS. The latter allows also the backing up of BIOS’ as well as updating via the Internet or from a file. Even downgrades are possible with this program. A built-in version check also checks the new BIOS version on their compatibility with the motherboard back.

If the command rate of memory in the BIOS setting let, conducted all benchmarks with 1T-Timings. The ASUS P5NSLI, as well as the ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe offered this option, enabling stable operation at this addressing speed. The ASUS P5W DH Deluxe offered no adjustment for the command rate in the BIOS
