Introduction

For some time, the PC in the living room tries to penetrate to take as a multimedia system foot. Not only since first barebones with the Pentium M on the market, there are quite interesting solutions that continue to this goal. Often users are put off but either by a too much noise it, to penetrate the PC in the living room, or just not all that which is always promised but provide the multimedia features of the system.

ASUS dares themselves with S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe in precisely this area and wishes to draw this in addition to good computing power by multimedia entertainment on their attention. Because it need not always the latest technology in the living room and a multimedia-Barebone primarily not to pure computing power game is, it refers to ASUS therefore to a mature platform based on the Intel 865 g, which will take the major advantage that an additional, loud, actively cooled graphics card is not required. Accordingly, the base comes 478 used and not Intel’s new processor generation based on the socket 775. Features such as PCI Express must therefore indeed be avoided, we believe ASUS breaks but no points from the Crown are thus, as the Barebone was designed primarily for use in the living room.

Asus is the competing S-presso with the following slogan:

< div >

As the name implies: just as a good cup of coffee
is this brand new Barebone solution; Compact, small and very tasteful.

Whether and what stones block the path to the living room to the right Cup of espresso, is thus figure it out in this article.

The casing and display

The case of S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe is unfortunately due not in elegant aluminium, but is made of blue plastic. Also with the dimensions of 243 x 181 x 330 mm (width x height x depth) ASUS goes quite its own way, as almost already uncomfortably large turns out just the width as compared to the competition. The carrying handle, which although is very helpful for transport as well as at the opening of the system, may be does not everyone’s taste. On the design of S-presso, the spirits of divorce therefore once more, at least the author reserves the right to say that a Barebone without carrying handle made of aluminium rather meets his taste, even if the look of S-presso impression not cheap. In the editorial, also quickly began to terms such as “Microwave” or “Mini oven” which had exceptionally not related to the processor used by us in this case.

The front of the S-presso does, however, quite pleasant. Completely in black and covering all slots and drives, she served their purpose very well. Immediately in the eye the LED touch jumps course Panel with the ASUS allows the control of the instant on features, which we further want to respond in the course of the review. In addition to an elfstelligen LED display that shows the status of the system or the playing songs or videos, it has temperature display for the housing and the processor. Exact values can be on Windows with a small program called ASUS front panel display display but also on the LED display, so that it is dependent not only on the bar graphs which allow depending on temperature only a categorisation in green, yellow, orange, red. In addition to the temperature, you can play also the fan speeds and tensions of the system on display with this program. This because only this font must to view however criticized be that only the first four digits of the display being used for this ad. It should be not a problem to go through the script on the first four digits and to use the remaining places for the display of values. So, the values could be much longer and better to read. Here however still hope is that ASUS makes changes to the display, since this function was newly implemented.

A round display on the front of S pressos also provides information about the selected volume. Special symbols on the LED display reveal the user also in which mode it is currently. Choices are doing TV, VCD, DVD, photo, music, MP3, FM. The display is currently but unfortunately the instant on mode nor in able Windows display more detailed information about playing titles or the television program. In music, so only the number of tracks is displayed at the TV station of only its channel number. Desirable, it would be natural to see also the title of the piece or but the name of television. Possibly ASUS can rework here still in the future with newer software, there is enough room for it.

The system is turned off, will be shown on the front display the date and time. The system in the short run disconnected from the electricity, but also the date is reset so that it will appear correctly only after next boot up. Until the time is again read from the BIOS or at the display accordingly.

The buttons of the display, which are actually none have to be touch incidentally do not, they serve their purpose. Only the power button of the system it is a right button. Hides the other buttons is the only feathers, which forward the electrostatic charging of the person and trigger to each function. This has the nice effect that the buttons can not wear out and also the smooth front of S-presso is not interrupted while, however it may be also unwanted startup, slightly too close to the front pre-accession streicht or would like to free them, for example, from dust.

The casing and display (continued)

The left door of the front the 7in1 cardreader, which can hold SM, MMC, CF cards, SD and memory/memory Pro sticks behind. A small LED indicates whether is currently on a card read or written. The upper flap goes on automatically as soon as the CD drive on a little button or through the operating system is advantage. This fell on us, that the small button to open and close the drive to open front door is quite difficult to achieve. The lower cover hides the front ports. Two USB 2.0 ports, a microphone input and a headphone out waiting here for the user. The quality of the headphones output must be criticized but because a significant noise can be heard here. Thus, even the connection of the headphones only over the rear ports is recommended.

In addition, a 4- and a 6-pin FireWire port, which are sealed in the factory of S-presso however and also not to use can be because they not are internally connected hide behind the bottom flap. They represent so only an option for the user, who would like to upgrade and then bring the ports hidden behind the slide to the front via a PCI FireWire card. The connections for this are therefore only mechanically, not be connected by ASUS themselves however still, because the motherboard has no FireWire controllers. We had to unfortunately find that colleagues we have overlooked this and certify the S-presso functional FireWire ports which it but unfortunately does not have, which is why we still once explicitly want to emphasise this.

On the left as well as on the right has S-presso ventilation slots. While on the right side of the CPU fan right behind the opening hides, to draw fresh air, the cards are hidden, on the left side behind the opening so that no direct air flow from right to left is possible if a card in the system is used. The heat is removed completely in this case its rear panel. This not only the power supply, but also two 60 x 60 mm large case fan is responsible that you want to keep the system at one of 3.4 GHz of fast Prescott on temperature.

Even if the power supply at first glance might give the impression, it would completely passively cooled, evident in the dismantling of the system that ASUS has put the fan only at the bottom of the power supply as we know it also ATX power supplies. The power supply of S-presso is thus by no means completely passively cooled, as some colleagues reported us to himself. The fan sucks directly from the heat of the CPU cooler and transporting them through the power supply to out there. In contrast to the case fans, this extremely quietly carries out his work. The case fans are, however, clearly perceptible at corresponding heat, but that we will enter into later even more precisely.

On the far side of the case the trained eye meets Sockets for PS/2 mouse and keyboard, an analog monitor output, a serial and a parallel port, an optical digital output, the networking and three more sound jacks on four additional USB 2.0 ports. The power supply can be separated completely from the net and offers operating modes for 115 and 230 V.

Rubber strips ensure a safe stand at the bottom of the case of S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe. The inner workings of S-presso is very tidy and clean moved all cables with clamps and cable ties. The power supply is kept entirely schraubenlos only from a temple, which you can easily down. On the development of more accurate, we will enter into still during the installation of the system.

Mainboard

ASUS sets in terms of mainboard course on a custom design. Being so the P4P8T used in the S-presso, which we already know from the article to the ASUS T2-R. Thus, the P4P8T is equipped with Intel’s 865G-Chipsatz and supported processors for Socket 478 with a maximum clock frequency of 3.4 GHz. A frontside bus 400, 533 and 800 thus represents not a problem for the mainboard. Also, dual-channel DDR400 is supported, however, a FSB800 is provided for this purpose. During a frontside bus, 200 MHz (FSB800), also DDR333 and DDR266 can be operated with the DDR333 memory due to the divisor with 320 MHz is addressed. At FSB533, DDR333, as well as 266 can be used while FSB400 supports only DDR 266. The maximum memory capacity is two gigabytes, where individual modules not exceeding a capacity of one gigabyte.

Intel’s integrated features to be exploited by the S-presso here, additional controllers for FireWire is however waived. Thanks to the ICH5 is two SATA ports available, which can be operated as a RAID but the user. Intel integrated extreme graphics 2 provides moving images into games but stalled the one time or another.

While the southbridge without cooler therefore, a very large model made of aluminium, which is located directly in the airstream of the CPU cooler is perched on the Northbridge. The two EIDE ports are located as well as the SATA ports in the request part of the mainboard, the Board does not provide a floppy controller. The analog devices AD1888 codec ensures the sound output, while the Realtek RTL8100C for the 10 / 100 MBit network interface.

Everyday experience

Installation

When a Barebone is the development of a well-thought-out layout for the housing of special importance, so that the user despite the cramped space as simple as possible to install individual components. Also here is ASUS a unusual way and is based thus no cover the Barebone, which you must deduct backwards but equips with a folding mechanism the system, with the front, and the top of the case can be folded forward. Therefore, it is the first step necessary to remove the plastic front of the case, so that then the display unprotected comes to light. This can be achieved, by pushing the front of top-down and forward cant. Here you have to go apparently somewhat more to works, as are the front only solves, if you think that would have to break but equal to anything. After a few attempts, this handle is however already more easily by hand.

Then dissolve the screw on the back of the case, which is a so-called knurled screw (Thumbscrew) that can be resolved without a screwdriver. The top is now easily pushed forward and then worked out with the help of the handle to the front. The Interior is then free. If you would like to add the processor, you must solve first all power cables and solve the power supply by a slight pressure on the lever provided. The power supply can then completely take out without having to solve screws. It has now used the processor, the cooler must be screwed. ASUS attached the cooler with four screws directly on the body and uses no additional retention module, how it is used by the Pentium 4 motherboards.

The memory can be as easy use on any other motherboard. In principle this not changes in the cards for the AGP or PCI-slot, however these are fixed by a small temple and not, as otherwise by screws. Should when installing the plug-in, but always, that you not einklemmt the cable running to the front, because they exactly between the AGP and PCI card. It has also performed these steps, don’t look to the drives. For these sets ASUS special screws you directly to the 3.5 in, “- and 5.25″ drive screws. Then you put the drives in provided for cages, where they click through Special hangers on the screws. After it has connected all cables with the drives, can be reinstated the power supply and the case closed.

Fell in very negative on the S-presso only dismantling an AGP graphics card. This is held: by a small temple at the end of the AGP port, as we know him countless desktop motherboards. In a Barebone a such mounting mechanism is but no point in our opinion, because it considerably impeded the development of the AGP graphics. Depending on the installed AGP card it is very difficult possible this lever at all approach. We had to take us several times a screwdriver to help with this, gently press the lever to. This can be of course not in the spirit of the inventor.

Otherwise, the installation of S-presso goes easily by hand. The manual which was unfortunately completely written in English, is a helpful companion, which clearly should help you get started also newcomers in the field of barebones in this endeavour.

Test system

Since ASUS ascribes the S-presso support of 3.4 GHz fast Pentium 4 on the basis of the Prescott core, we want to let us also no slouch and use just these processor for our tests. Because we want to perform at least a few performance measurements, 5900 ultra used, operating but not quite so simply proved, as originally planned came also a Radeon 9600 and GeForce FX.

We all resorted so on the following test system:

Multimedia

For the multimedia functions of S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe, ASUS provides a remote user to the page that is very well met their service. The individual functions of this can control under Windows as well as in the instant on mode. For the instant on mode sets the S-presso necessarily should a software advance, which however will be 200 MB unpartitioned disk space required and thus possible already before the operating system installed. Unfortunately, the instant on software only on a PATA hard drive can be install, since a SATA hard drive is detected in the first port. We keep the use of the instant on feature with the S-presso not only for this reason totally superfluous. The software can be installed on a PATA hard disk while easily and works also as desired, can be used only in combination with the integrated graphics – for an external graphics card, she completely denied their service. This is due to the principle of the software that installed a small Linux operating system and comes up accordingly unfortunately also the complete machine as soon as you would like to use instant on. Except that you do not necessarily need an operating system to use the multimedia functions of S-presso, instant on has therefore no advantages for the user – even more disadvantages. If you take already 100 Watts of power consumption in order and would like to do anyway by the way other things on the PC in many cases, you should rather start equal to Windows and not a worse service at the instant on feature settle.

Windows makes use of ASUS home theater software of InterVideo, very is modeled after the design of the Windows Media Center Edition. When you first start, the settings are automatically scanned. On the whole, the software makes a very good impression and can be controlled either via the mouse or the remote control. For the TV function is available a text or a programme guide of tvtv.de via the Internet available. Records of television are made in the MPEG2 format. If you would like to receive an overview of the current TV channel quickly, you can use the “channel surfing”feature which displays 16 channels at the same time and always updated.

When playing MP3 tracks one depends on the support of the Windows Media Player because the software uses its playlist. But here too are the criticisms of the software. Although it automatically scans all TV channels, but provides them with the appropriate name, but only the channel number displays, which significantly complicates the selection. Also during the MP3 playback, similar shortcomings show, as you are not even read tags of the songs and so the display of the interpreter or the album is not always guaranteed. As well, only the frequencies appear at the radio stations, automatic recognition of the name will not be performed.

Overall, is the offer of InterVideo Home Theater while very rich, deep however not persuades, because the individual functions are designed not up to the last consequence. Most users will use to play of their songs or videos so other programs, if they can not control via remote control.

The TV show an ASUS relies on the CX23881 chip made by Conexant and is apparently (almost) identical with the Leadtek WinFast TV2000 XP Expert. Because the chip Conexant HDTV support, we the card also always happy for HDTV presentation used. The built-in tuner works however analog, although are also digital data via satellite, cable or terrestrial no problem for the CX23881. The analog-to-digital converter is one 10 bit ADC. In addition, he can both with the PAL, SECAM bypass also NTSC standard. In addition to the TV input offers an analog FM tuner input and a S-video input. This input camcorder or DVD player can be transferred via so, for example, videos on the video recorder to the PC. It is but probably noticed “only” to a S-video input, an S-video output that offers not S-presso.

The quality of TV picture is although not the best we ever have to face. To play in a window on the monitor but completely sufficient. In full-screen mode, the image on a large TFT high resolution due to the resulting blur can not quite convince.

Volume

Analog to our housing tests we conducted the measurements at a distance of approximately 40 cm at four different points. It should be noted that we have no completely noise-free area and thus easily are the results of the tests carried out under perfect conditions. ASUS itself specifies S-presso a typical noise “29 DB at rest” for that. Of course you reveals this no processor or other hardware components. We insert our well-known test system for our measurements, but resorted to integrated graphics, since we believe in the S-presso finding nothing has an actively cooled graphics card.

Of course you can call oversized our test system for a Barebone something, so far we are not yet on the values from ASUS. Subjectively annoying you assumed only the two case fan on the back of this, which already operate on our system after a short time. With a slower processor, one can therefore probably even lower noise. The sound plays a crucial role you should probably also not necessarily use on a Pentium 4 with Prescott core. Principle is always to keep in mind that a computer on the desktop is perceived differently as you subjectively but more pleasant feel a system under the table, which measured Lautstärke although may higher, as a user due to the different positioning of the system as much.

The measured results in view of the used processor surprised us despite using a passive video card. As a lover of quiet systems however, you should try as far as possible reduce the activity of the rear case fan, since them despite good values just under load a little positive overall impression tarnish.

Power consumption

We have measured the power consumption of the S-presso. It should be noted that the power consumption of the entire system was measured here. In addition to the power consumption with integrated graphics, we have also the power consumption with built-in GeForce FX 5900 Ultra and measured in stand-by. Full load was achieved by a burn-in test for the CPU ran also FarCry and were adversely affected by the video card. Once again, to give the sense or nonsense of the instant on feature, we measured even here a comparison value, measured in the free instant on mode.

Information in Watts (W)

With the power of the Pentium 4 3.4 is noticeable GHz Prescott of course, that ensures a minimal power consumption by more than 90 watts in the idle state with integrated graphics. The full-load operation with built-in GeForce FX 5900 ultra shows slowly but surely the limits of the power supply on, even if this operation, such as our “Incompatibilities” section will show, anyway, will not be used. The entire system with LED display and date display approved is still 4.6 Watts in standby. Against a Barebone based on the Pentium M it is thus in no way and follows what is not surprising in view of the installed components more full blown desktop systems.

The instant on mode consumes approximately 97 Watts in uncompressed mode, so – offers no advantage in terms of power consumption on the independence of the operating system. Since also under instant on all components of the system must be operated to use all properties, the user is not on savings can hope.

Temperatures

It was the S-presso during our test runs easily possible to keep the built-in components to sufficient temperature. Depending on the load, the noise through the use of different fan varied course. Using the integrated graphics processor in the sleep mode constant at held 42 ° C, while blew up the system at about 33 ° C. This turned the processor fan 2072 rpm and the case fan with 1442 RPM.

Under full load, which looked somewhat different then. The CPU fan turned on 2540 rpm and the case fan is increased to approximately 1900 rpm. After some time, the system at 56 ° C for the processor and the system temperature is 43 ° C commuted a. However, it is interesting that the front display in a CPU usage of 100 percent with the output of the values will get problems. The script runs only still halting of the display and some ads are easily skipped. An accurate reading of the values is possible only through additional programs on the operating system.

Incompatibilities

Unfortunately, our test of S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe ran not complete without problems now. The first hurdle had to be taken in the choice of memory already. With the 2 x 512 MB of our selected DDR400 Corsair TWINX1024 3200LL was a boats not at all possible. But even with 2 x 512 MB, TwinMOS TwiSTER DDR500 our projects not of success was crowned. Since it was not even granted us with DDR400 to get into the BIOS the cause seemed quickly found. The P4P8T built-up in the S-presso not probably did the automatically selected timings (by SPD). To change these timings however, it must come only once in the BIOS, what exactly the problem was. For this reason, we chose old DDR266 memory from Samsung, which allowed a boot. In the BIOS, then the timings are greatly reduced, and reinstalled the DDR400 from Corsair. And behold, that drove up easily systems. After countless deletion of CMOS and repeated change of memory, then at some point, the fastest possible timings were found. 2, 5-3-3-6-4 Had to be used to select these but much more slowly than the otherwise estimated values of 2-3-2-6-4.

For normal users, which in most cases can not access a wide range of modules of from different manufacturers, this is of course in any way to cope with. In the single-channel operation, it was nevertheless granted to boot comprehensive module of TwinMOS TwiSTER DDR500 with a single 256 MB. The 512 MB module denied even this.

Because the S-presso has an AGP slot, nothing in the way is the use of a graphics card in the replacement of the integrated graphics unit basically. Because Asus has not quite outside built the AGP slot, even the use of dual slot graphics cards would be possible, for example, the number of GeForce FX 5900 (ultra). This pure installation, the user has also no problems. This dive up until when you want to close the S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe again. This is simply not possible with current graphics cards for two different reasons. With Asus, it has unfortunately overlooked that a small module to 5.25 “Drive Bay is installed, collides with longer video cards.” The use of a GeForce FX 5900 (ultra) prevents so not about the design of the graphics card, fill two slots, but their length. This module prevents also use of all current graphics cards that have approximately the length of a GeForce FX 5900.

Of course, we wanted to leave this sitting not on us and screwed off without further ADO in the hope the fortified module, then to be able to close the system. Not in mind we had the clip for the 5.25 However “drive, now proposes the against the passive radiator mounted on the back of the graphics card, and completely impossible for a closing of the system.” We have carried out therefore our power measurements with a GeForce FX 5900 ultra with easy open housing.

But what graphics cards can be applied easily? The GeForce FX 5900-and fast models of the GeForce 6 series are not eligible. With a GeForce FX 5900 (ultra), the PCB has a length of 216 mm – this is much too long for the S-presso. A Radeon 9700 (PCB length: 175 mm) with reference design is however as well as a Radeon 9600 (166 mm) and GeForce 4 Ti4200 (175 mm) easy to operate. However the video cards may have a heatsink on the back never, then also a short video card does not fit. The PCB of the card must not be however much longer than 175 mm, you would like to purchase from Kagi, not the small circuit board of the 5.25 “drive Bay solve and hang loose in the package can be.” We go out of a maximum length of approximately 185 mm, guarantee however to do this.

We consider useful the installation of a fast and thus most likely inadequate video card in a Barebone although due to the resulting sound as well as due to the heat for little, however, the customer should be set before his purchase in knowledge, what graphics cards at all can be installed, and this unfortunately nowhere specifies ASUS.

Performance

Is no importance to be in fact the performance of S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe part, because the system is designed only for players. Nevertheless, we want to publish some of the values, the both with integrated Intel extreme graphics 2 as identified with Radeon 9600 or GeForce FX 5900 ultra.

We think the use of a passively cooled Radeon 9600 quite useful, because on the one hand to increase the graphics performance, the video card but on the other hand brought a TV-out the system, through which it otherwise unfortunately does. The S-presso reached a total of nearly the performance of a full blown desktop system, where the results with a GeForce FX 5900 ultra due to the previously described incompatibilities in fact have little practical relevance. As soon as the video card is limitierend, this is S-presso P4C800 e Deluxe neck and neck.

Also the measured performance of the disk is no reason to the complaints. The S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe achieves very good values under HD tach.

BIOS and overclocking

The BIOS is entirely uncharacteristic for a motherboard made by ASUS. Overclocking features not present in the BIOS virtually, as the user can not change the front-side bus. Only the timing of the store, whose frequency and voltage can be manually to choose. Hyper-Threading can be by the user either enabled or disabled. When using integrated graphics, 32 MB of RAM for the graphics unit provide maximum.

The BIOS provides otherwise rather rudimentary food, we can in this case speak the following images:

Linux?

Since ASUS S-presso respect only support for Windows 2000 and XP which, who wanted to let us not take the fun and have fed the 2005 01 S-presso at least for a short test with kanotix. Kanotix is a complete booting from CD Linux-system with graphical user interface based on Debian SID with the tools from Knoppix. As a graphics card, we put a the passively cooled Radeon 9600 from creative for these attempts.

For Linux experts, the use of kanotix might although probably inconceivable for a test, how close a system for the operation under Linux is, is it a good base but, because you quickly and easily can run it from CD. Also our attempts with the S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe were crowned with success in combination with kanotix. However, there is also no reason why Linux should work together with the installed system. Initial attempts on our part to take the TV card under Linux in operation, failed unfortunately. Needed something so as so often tinkering, if you would like to use also this feature on Linux.

Conclusion

To receive a recommendation from us, S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe lacks the ASUS despite its favourable price of around 260 euros the last consequence. So it offers while a 7in1 Kartenleser, on FireWire, the user do but unfortunately without delivery. For an system airliner on multimedia with which it brings most of the time also a camcorder in conjunction, unfortunately, if you not the unnecessary detour through the TV card in order to take a KO criterion. In addition, an optical output is provided while, a corresponding input you must forgo but unfortunately. The system itself is well thought out, shows its weaknesses however in combination with current graphics cards, as they practically do not operate without to leave the case open. Also the memory compatibility difficult initially considerable, what we otherwise are not used by ASUS us.

The LED display is although very nicely done, with the current software but still not be perfection driven. Both display the system information as well as the video and music, television and radio stations can, as already in the article described, nor increased significantly be. Here, it remains to be seen what updates ASUS provides to the user in the future. As the management of also not quite convincing-looking home theater software goes easily with the remote control of the hand, the user is probably not often use Panel the touch up on initial Spielrein. In this context also the next point of criticism arises as to. The instant on-function of S-presso knows not to convince, because you can use it for one only in combination with the integrated graphics, on the other hand however must be 200 MB unpartitionierter disk space for installation available and also starts the entire system, if you would like to play a music CD only. This is however necessary, since it otherwise can access not the functions of the TV show. Who already use Windows as the operating system, should access our opinion always there the available home theater software.

The volume of S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe has held despite our daring test system limited and leaves with slower components still lower. Only disruptive of the two rear case fan, that drive the noise level significantly in height when they are automatically turn thanks to ASUS Q-fan technology after a short time.

However, it appears to remain barred from S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe the way to the living room the ASUS, as a connection to the TV only on the VGA output or an external video card is possible. Faced with an integrated TV card, ASUS seems to have this goal but also not, but rather would like to bring life into the study – to achieve this the S-presso quite.

How should finally be used the ASUS S-presso S1-P111 Deluxe, is however not very easy to decide. As a pure multimedia PC he is only conditionally suitable due to the incompatibilities with the current graphics cards, as well as a games-Barebone, so that it once again on the customer depends, what he expects from his system.
