Phoning with your mobile or PSTN is so cheap in Germany as never before. Prices in mobile communications have dropped in unexpectedly strong after several years of largely stable rates since 2005 by 12 percent. In the last ten years the prices of mobile phone conversations have halved even with more than minus 54 percent.

Basis of the calculations is the development of consumer price indices for telecommunications of the Federal Statistical Office. BITKOM attributes the drop in prices in particular to the sharp competition between the mobile operators. Because calculated each citizens own a mobile phone since August 2006. Additional pressure on the prices results from decisions of the German regulatory authority and the Commission.

After the prices in the fixed last only moderate, BITKOM currently again anticipates a strong decline. Prices in the fixed by almost half have fallen over the last decade. At the end of the 1990s was the liberalization of telecommunications markets. Since 1998, call-by-call tariffs for long-distance and international calls as well as the complete change of telephone provider allowed. The cheapest phone calls in the ten most important countries have become since then to 97 percent cheaper according to the Federal Network Agency.
