Further miniaturization in Flash memory
Intel’s and microns Flash joint venture IN IM Flash technologies has announced a further step in the miniaturization of Flash devices. The NAND devices of type MLC are made in the current 34-nm process and store thanks to new technology 3 bits per cell.
In combination, this is the currently smallest according to company information available on the market 32-Gigabit chip with a size of only 126 mm square. The new chips are intended primarily for Flash cards and USB sticks, where density and cost efficiency are crucial. For solid state drives will be at least Intel and Micron, probably for the time being not using memory modules. First chips are currently gesampled and the start of mass production is expected for the fourth quarter of this year. Also later this year will be presented the 2 x-nm technology for future products.
