Intel shows first working 45-nm chips
Intel has reached an important milestone in the development of the next generation of its semiconductor manufacturing. Managed Intel as probably first according to the own company, full-featured 11 mm² make large 153-Mbit SRAM chips using 45-nm process technology.
For Intel, this success means that the company on track to produce chips with the 45-nm manufacturing technology using 300 mm wafers is in 2007.
With Intel’s 45-nm manufacturing chips to can make, that have a five times less power than today’s chips. The 45-nm SRAM chip has more than 1 billion transistors. Although not considered SRAM is, as can be to market product, with such chips before the start of production of processors and other logic chips based on the 45-nm manufacturing process the technical capacity, the return on the procedure, as well as the reliability of the chips show up.
In addition to the D1D factory in Oregon, where the 45-nm development at Intel is already under way, production resources, the company with the FAB 32 in Arizona, as well as the FAB announced 28 in Israel two plants for the production of chips using 45-nm manufacturing technology. These are currently under construction. To the 45nm production, Intel has published an interview with Mark Bohr, senior fellow:
≪ blockquote > Bill Holt, Vice President of Intel technology and manufacturing group
We are not only the first company which has used the 65-nm manufacturing technology in mass production, but can also as first company present functional 45-nm chips. This shows very clearly the leading position of Intel in chip production. Intel looks back on a long tradition, implement technological leaps in innovation in concrete tangible user benefits. Our 45-nm technology will form the basis for PCs with higher performance per watt, significantly improve the use and ease of use.
