Worm attacked MySQL databases
The British Sophos security expert warns of a new variant of the Forbot worm which has MySQL open source database software to the target. MySQL is a popular alternative to the SQL Server database software from Microsoft.
The “W32/Forbot-DY” worm is the latest addition to the Forbot family and is spreading not only across the Internet, but also trying to make a zombie network. Using a computer infected with Forbot, hackers can launch a denial-of-service attack from a distance. Forbot DY attempts to spread via network shares that are protected only with simple passwords, and it uses two Microsoft security vulnerabilities: RPC DCOM (MS03-039) and LSASS (MS04-011).
“The Forbot worm applies to naked violence at cracking the weak passwords”, said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. “System administrators should therefore ensure, that their machines with the latest security patches are protected”, so Cluley.
